The pottery studio at Tiwi Design Aboriginal Corporation is the longest surviving pottery in a remote Aboriginal community. The studio was established in 1972 by two Tiwi artists, Eddie Puruntatameri and John Bosco Tipiloura.
By 1999 Tiwi Design was keen to reinvigorate the pottery studio. This it did by exploring new directions, creating sculptural ceramic pieces in addition to the functional wares for which the pottery studio had become so well known. The results speak for themselves: exciting, innovative and sometimes whimsical interpretations of traditional and contemporary Tiwi life and culture. |
