Gordon Hookey was born in Cloncurry, north-west Queensland, in 1961 and is of the Waanyi people. He completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Sydney, in 1992. Hookey has held a number of exhibitions and collaborative projects in Australia and abroad since the early 1990s. Solo exhibitions of note include Ruddock's wheel, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, Liverpool, New South Wales (2001), and Interface inya face, Canberra Contemporary Art Space (1995). Recent group exhibitions include Cont-sent-trick-sir-kills, Linden--St Kilda Centre for Contemporary Arts, Melbourne (2003), Uncommon world, National Gallery of Australia, Canberra (2001), and Beyond the pale: contemporary indigenous art: 2000 Adelaide biennial of Australian art, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide (2000). He has participated in a large number of artist-residencies throughout his career. Gordon Hookey's work is represented in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Queensland Art Gallery, Brisbane.
