Julie
Dowling was born in Perth in 1969. She is of the Badimaya/Yamatji
language group and currently lives in Perth. Dowling studied at
Claremont School of Art and Curtin University in Perth. She has
exhibited widely both in Australia and overseas and has been the
recipient of several art awards including the Mandorla Award for
Religious Art (2001). In 2002 and 2001 she was a finalist in the
Archibald Prize. Julie Dowling has held several solo exhibitions
at Artplace, Perth, and her most recent solo exhibition
Yes, Boss! was held at Fortyfivedownstairs, Melbourne,
in 2002. Group exhibitions of note include
It's a beautiful day. New painting in Australia: 2 at the
Ian Potter Museum of Art, the University of Melbourne and the Art
Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney (2002), and Beyond
the pale: contemporary Indigenous art: 2000 Adelaide biennial of
Australian art, Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide.
Her work is represented in most Australian state collections. Julie
Dowling was short-listed for the 1998 RAKA Award.
